An underground market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of uncertain source.
Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the service has taken down problematic content and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Digital Trading Activities
Research also found groups with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with numerous of users, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.
After moments of entering one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Pricing
Within these communities, posts show dark colored packages with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
